In the 1830s, a North Carolina plantation owner bought 20 acres in Nags Head to use as a summer retreat. Within 20 years, a thriving resort was centered around the Nags Head Hotel. In the 1870's, the shifting sands of Jockey's Ridge claimed the hotel but left many original cottages from that era. Several cottages were built from lumber salvaged from shipwrecks.
