Historic Elizabeth City, North Carolina has over 400 points of historic interest listed in the National Register. In 1779, it was a ferry crossing; today, Elizabeth City's revitalized waterfront boasts some of the finest restaurants, shops and recreational opportunities in North Carolina. The Elizabeth City US Coast Guard's training and rescue facility has been the focus of many rescues by sea and by air. Rescue teams from the station have been featured in the national spotlight on many occasions, including several daring rescues during the famous ''Perfect Storm'' of 1991.
